Description:
In The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí, the artist refers to the creation of this figure with a head of roses and fingernails of ermine fur. The iconography of the head of roses is directly related to paintings such as Birth of Liquid Desires from 1932 and Woman with Head of Roses from 1935. The work also played a prominent role in The International Surrealist Exhibition held in London in 1936. Issue number 4 of the International Surrealist Bulletin included a photograph of the performance artist Sheila Legge modelling the head of roses to accompany its article on the exhibition. In the Dictionnaire abregé de surrealisme of 1938, Dalí illustrated the entry ‘Rose’ with this same iconography.
